[The Shadow That Melts The Flesh]

Non-diegetic Audio Apparitions

Beginnings

This project began as I was exploring ideas to use in a  student workshop I was devising, on using pedals in unusual and creative ways. When the workshop was cancelled, I decided to keep experimenting.

I discovered a way to create long loops with very long decay times without causing hum or noise. Once this process was proven to work, the concept that became The Shadow That Melts The Flesh was born.

Early Work & Tech Development

Using my own version of advanced Frippertronics, I began experimenting with the sounds it made available, and made the first (as yet unreleased) demo recording.

Although dissatisfied with it as a whole, I found the ethereal tones captivating and inspiring. It became obvious there was much potential here, and so I began working on a way to incorporate greater tonal range and improve my control over the sounds created.

After some time and investment, I had three guitars, two amps, ebows, slides, multiple effects loops and modulators, plus the nub of an idea, so I went into the studio.

The Irrational Triptych

Over Easter of 2019, I created a full length album, e. It took 2 days to setup and rehearse for, and then was recorded in a single day. All tracks were recorded in a single take and are presented as performed.

The Irrational Tryptich idea was born when considering the theme of this album - irrationality that sometimes appears to have a pattern, but never truly repeats, a concept already found in mathematics.

Two more mathematically themed albums are planned

The second album φ, or phi, was recorded in 2022, with a view to release during 2023.

Other Works

Alongside The Irrational Triptych, other music recorded which does not sit within the brief will be released on an ad hoc basis.

In October of 2021, I was honoured to be included in a fundraising compilation album, Trick Or Treat. That piece is exclusive to the compilation album, in perpetuity.

I was also commissioned to provide musical backing and sound effects for Leicester College acting students in April 2021.

In 2023 I contributed to a cover version on an album released by Kenton Hall: and I was also honoured in the truest sense to appear extensively on the musical score to the audio-movie London After Midnight, which I strongly recommend to you all.

The 2 tracks of this EP separates and, in turn, explores the extreme contrasts in style and sound which are usually combined to make the Shadow Melts Flesh musical output.

The first album of The Irrational Tryptich.

The title refers to the irrational number e, or Euler's Number. Several other such references exist within and around the piece; some are blatant, while others are very obscure.

Please come back to this site for news about new music, release dates, project developments, etc.

I am happy to announce that plans for a live performance experience are in progress. Naturally, this will not be a 'gig' in the traditional sense.
